Students - Victims of Peer Pressure

M.M.M.Ahmed, Editor,Proactive Personality Developer

* Peer pressure is a vital factor in shaping up of an individual's personality and is an essential part of learning experience.

* Peer pressure is a social problem and a significant part of college life.

* The question is how does one make the best out of one's peers and manage the pressure that comes with it.

* The causes of peer pressure are alcohol, drugs, smoking, fashion, food habits, academics, partying and live-in relationships.

* Under-aged students over drink to the point where ambulances are caused for emergencies.

* A few students are unable to handle the sudden freedom they are provided at hostels after they have lived with their parents.

* Students try to fit into peers culture and leave what they have been taught back home by parents and do what their friends at campus do.

* The best way to fight peer pressure is to stay firm on who you are, what you believe in and what you stand for. Just because it is fun and everyone does it need not make it right.

* Immune yourself to peer pressure. Do not compromise your values, it is helpful to speak to a trusted grown up person if you feel you are being pushed into an undesirable situation.

* Avoid the trigger situation and the peer pressure will subside.

* If your so-called group of friends do not respect your values, they are probably not worth it.

* You are lucky, if you have good friends. You are unlucky, if you have bad friends. A person is known by his/her friends.
